This piece is part of a series begun in 2012 and is inspired by Elizabeth Gourlay's interest in color, music and architecture.
The paintings grow out of the works on paper, where the ideas originate. The forms are geometric and relate to architecture, but are not hard-edged as she allows gesture in creating edges and layers.
The color relates to music as Gourlay played with quantities in the structural bars. She is wondering what the bright green sounds like and the blue-gray when pushed down by the heavier dark gray.
Elizabeth Gourlay is an American abstract artist whose work emerges from a progressive process of layering colour, lines and forms, informed both by inner emotional states and her observation of nature and architecture. She lives and works in Chester (CT).
